How to kick-start your business search in the New Year

Last updated: April 9, 2020

With 2020 here, it’s a great time to reassess your goals and set yourself up for success. Check out our top tips to crank your business search up to the next notch in the New Year!

1. Create a checklist

Write a list of everything that needs to be done to get off to a flying start with your business or franchise search in 2020. Your list may include enquiring about a particular opportunity, researching a business, or figuring out which industry you’re drawn to. Regardless of what’s on your list set aside time in small daily chunks to work your way through each task.

2. Use the summer break to think

Stepping away from your day-to-day is a great way to build perspective on your current work life. Spending just and an hour or two in early January cranking up your business search could really reap rewards and ensure you start 2020 with a bang.

3. Seek advice

Once you’ve got the Christmas cake and champagne out of the way find time to seek a new perspective from friends and family. Sometimes a problem shared is a problem halved as the old adage goes. It’s also a great chance to look into the professional advice you’ll need when purchasing a business or franchise. Take some time to do some research – whether you’re investigating what different industries have to offer, or searching for an experienced accountant to help with your business purchase, anything you can do now will help get you ready to hit the ground running in January.

4. Review your objectives and targets

Do you have a timeline? What type of business do you want to own? Outline what your dream business opportunity looks like and then go through and really focus down on a few key must-haves, like location, price, or brand-name.  Keep your dream-business list handy when you’re shortlisting potential opportunities to see how closely they align with your deal-breakers. Use the summer time to set yourself some clear short, medium and long term goals – and stick to them. This isn’t about making unrealistic New Year’s resolutions, but setting yourself bite-sized objectives so you can realise your dream of own a business in 2020.

Finally, all the best from all of us at SEEK Business for your business search, we hope the New Year is fruitful!
