Sydney & NSW country
The business operates on a circuit of agricultural & country shows together with an expanding list of retirement villages and nursing homes within Sydney. Prominent positions at country shows have been established over many years of attendance.
Significant potential for growth exists for this business by way of an upgrade to the website, through social media marketing. Shows attended are currently limited to NSW. The Margaret Cane brand has become well-known for high quality and reasonably priced Australian-made garments and it may also be possible to explore the avenue of franchising the brand, whilst still retaining control over the design and manufacturing side of the business.
No formal qualifications are required and experience will be learnt very quickly on the job. Good interpersonal skills and a desire to provide clients with a rewarding shopping experience will in itself be a reward for any new owner. Proven garment patterns are included. There is ample stock and all the equipment needed, including a custom-built trailer, to begin selling immediately. Simply book some markets and go sell!
Currently 3-4 days per week, working from 10am - 12.30pm plus travel and setup times.
No leases
No employees just husband and wife operators.
The owners have passed retirement age and would like to enjoy their retirement years playing more golf! A holiday would be nice too! Their adult children have well-established careers in their own professions and have no desire to take over the business.
The business specialises in the marketing of Ladies blouses and tops. It also on-sells knitwear including rugby tops, wool jackets, vests and cardigans.
Transporting the clothing and associated racks and tables etc is a significant part of the business and this is done by car and trailer. Distance travelled each year would total approximately 20,000kms and visiting these shows keeps two people fully active in setting up, selling and packing down at the end of the show. Although for many years Margaret ran the business on her own as more of a hobby, it is now, ideally, a 2-person business.
Travel is kept within NSW although this could be extended to shows in other states by a keen and enthusiastic purchaser.
There is an extensive database of loyal, repeat clients that has been established over many years of attendance at country agricultural shows and other markets and fairs.
A circuit of retirement villages and nursing homes is a more recent addition to the business and the marketing and selling of clothing to village residents presents a valuable opportunity for elderly people to purchase in the comfort of their village. The bulk of customers would fall into the 40-60 age range where more disposable income is available, however many younger and older customers provide a good variety of ages.
The fact that the shirts and tops are designed and manufactured in Australia makes the business unique. Australian consumers want Australian-made products and readily support businesses that produce high quality and reasonably priced products.
Established as a hobby in 1992 by the current owner, this has become a well run and well organised business which is currently operated from home on an as-needs basis. Operated by Margaret for many years as a hobby the business increased in size when her husband sold his own business and joined forces with Margaret, enabling more markets to be attended and a bigger circuit to be established. Unique designs, colourful patterns, high quality cotton materials and high quality manufacture all combine to make a unique Australian-made product.
