Single dad looking for flexibility

After two years as a Smartline mortgage broker, Steve Roddick is enjoying the freedom of being self-employed.

“I’m a single dad so having the flexibility to work from home is a great bonus,” he says.

A career crossroad set a bright new direction

After more than seven and a half years with a big four bank as a home loan specialist, Ruby Kennedy decided it was time for her next career challenge.

“For me, mortgage advisory was a natural progression because I love doing home loans and helping customers,” Ruby explains. “The alternative was to move into a management position within the bank, but I knew that wasn’t right for me.”

Ruby says that being her own boss and having access to a much broader selection of lending products meant she was better placed to serve her clients.

“At the bank, if I couldn’t offer the right product to suit a client’s needs, I had to refer them to a mortgage adviser,” she says. “Now, with access to a really varied selection of lenders and products, I can just get on with what I love most about my work – helping clients.”

Dream of business ownership comes true

After 11 years in home lending with two major banks – and as many years eyeing business ownership – Michael Saliba took the plunge in 2014 and “hasn’t looked back”.

Michael opened his business in partnership with Mehdi Zoghbi with a wish to use his knowledge and experience in lending, marketing and networking to create something meaningful for his future.

“I know it’s a cliché to say it, but I really do love it, and I haven’t looked back,” Michael says. Set yourself up for success and get out there and do it. Don’t hesitate. Differentiate yourself. While passion and enthusiasm are important, do take the time to clarify your key strengths and points of difference – then sell yourself.

“I don’t feel like I’m working anymore. I’m having fun getting to know people and helping them to achieve their financial goals. It could be said the loan writing is a bi-product of doing what I love.”
