About the Opportunity
The business involves promoting the ranges of displays and shopfittings to interior designers and architects involved in retail fit-outs, and/or the end users in the specific retail segments. The European-based principal produces catalogues in electronic and hard copy forms at least annually and these are available to the Australian agent/distributor as promotional items. We have an email list of just under 700 independent optometrists which are included in the sale together with a custom-built CRM, Quoting and Project Management computer program which has customer history going back approx 15 years. Stock holdiing is minimal (<$10K) as most items are imported on an indent basis and some others are fabricated locally. Patterns of all items produced locally and details of current local suppliers included in the sale. At its peak, approx 10 years ago, the business turnover reached $1 million p.a. but has fallen substantially since post GFC and due to current owners' ill health. Accounts are not available as the business has always been run within the auspices of a holding company for several businesses. The product range is largely high-end with the emphasis on innovative design and good quality. Gross profit margins are 40% plus on all items. To date, the business has been focused solely on the independent retail eyewear & sunglasses market which has been under pressure due largely to the entry of SpecSavers into Australia in 2009. Products designed for the other retail sectors were introduced in late 2018 and have yet to be introduced to those sectors of the Australian retail market.
Year Business Established
Year Licensing / Distribution Commenced
The business started out as an adjunct to our optical wholesaling business when we looked to supply lockable displays for sunglasses in our optometrist customers' premises. We eventually sourced good-quality well-designed displays from the now principal company which had only just commenced business at that time. Our supplier's product range grew and we decided to acquire the agency for Australia. Having supplied spectacle frame & sunglass displays to a number of optometrists, we then began designing and building new optometry practices.
